The Dish Network User's Resource
DISH generally takes a few weeks to distribute the newest software to everyone in phases, keyed to the previous version, serial number (R00...), BootStrap version and BuildConfig ID of the receiver. This is to prevent the call centers from getting flooded and, in case of a problem, to prevent everyone with the receiver from having it “upgraded” to a door stop. Software is not released by regions (though there have been some rare exceptions), by how long you've had the receiver, or by request. You cannot force your receiver to take an upgrade before it is authorized.
Turn off your receiver when you are not using it and make sure that you have your settings to accept upgrades automatically (for those receivers with the option) if you want the upgrade. If you find you no longer want an upgrade, there is no way to “roll back” to a previous version.
Software upgrades are delivered via satellite - a phone line connection is not needed.

Previous notes:
Updated information received 8/7/02.
With the latest software versions, all Dish receivers (except the 2000) are capable of supporting cascading switches (TWIN or Quad to SW21). The 501, 301, 3900 (Upgraded), 4900 (Upgraded) and 6000 receivers will also have the capability to cascade an SW64 switch to an SW21 allowing reception of 4 satellite locations simultaneously. This was designed to receive 129° and 61.5°, but it will work with any combination of side satellites.
The latest software version also will now show that there are local channels available on additional satellites even if the receiver does not have a dish pointed to that satellite location. A message stating that the channel is available by calling Dish and getting a free Dish and free installation. This feature was mandated by the FCC in order for Dish to be allowed to continue to send locals from the “side” satellites at 61.5°, 148° and 129°.
Many of the newer software versions are now allowing local channels to appear on their over the air (OTA) channel designation. So YOUR local channel 5 would appear on Dish channel 5.
(This page was originally posted on 7/25/02 at DBSTalk.com (used by permission) before the Dish Network web site had official information (anyone have the new link?) on software releases. The EKB version of the web page will remain since Dish has pulled this information off their web site twice before and in 2/07 and 2Q11 moved it with no form of redirect. Updates here are based on the Dish page and user reports.)
The software versions are continually updated. Any updates and corrections are welcome. Please send comments, corrections and updates to BobaBird@aol.com.
